|JOB TITLE:||Military Technical Writer|
|MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES|
|The ideal candidate will have the ability to create, assimilate, and convey military technical material in a concise and effective manner. Must have the ability to analyze the situation of a particular project with regard to audience, purpose, and context. Must be able to create documentation designed for optimal readability and usability in the following areas:
Arrangement – order and organization of visual elements so that readers can visualize the structure
Emphasis – how the document displays important sections through prominence or intensity.
Clarity – must be able to help the receiver decode the message, to understand it quickly and completely, and, when necessary, to react without ambivalence.
Conciseness – must be able to present the visual bulk and intricacy of the document in order for the audience to easily use the document.
Tone – must be able to communicate the sound or feel of the document accurately for the intended audience.
Ethos – All documentation must be professional and error free to maintain the credibility of the company with the intended audience.
Experience in audience profiling, user task analysis, information architecture, content development, technical and editorial reviews, and formatting and publishing. Experience in standard style guides such as but not limited to the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) and The Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications.
Under the guidance of a higher grade technical manuals writer-editor, coordinates, plans, edits, and prepares (either in-house or contract method) a variety of less complex technical publications. Performs research, reviews specifications; uses “hands-on” approach, as required, to produce technical manuals.
Plans, coordinates, and prepares publications and supporting technical documentation for assigned project area. Project area consists of portions of technical manuals concerning less complex subsystems or component Items, documentation of specification changes to new or modified parts or subassemblies. Obtains Information pertinent to preparation of assigned publication through research of specialized sources (I.e. Specifications, correspondence, drawings, standards, etc.); Interviews/discussions with appropriate technical personnel. Attends validations/verifications.
Selects, organizes, evaluates, and presents pertinent data In an understandable manner considering purpose of publication, Item covered, and Intended audience. Describes all necessary technical aspects as to description, functioning, operating procedures, and the servicing and maintenance of various armaments or equipment. Determines the type and scope of tabulated data, drawings, photographs, and the Illustrations to be Included. Assures that the overall publication Is In accordance with format prescribed by proper authority.
Assists higher graded technical writer-editors In developing contract requirements and maintaining surveillance over commercial contracts for assigned project area. Coordinates and/or collaborates with other technical elements. Edits written material received from contractor to assure that data adequately and accurately describes the exact operating characteristics reflected In manual operations and that maintenance tasks are appropriately expressed and In proper sequence. Edits, validates, and evaluates the accuracy and adequacy of Illustrations to Insure that material Is technically accurate and In agreement with hardware, engineering drawings, and/or other reference data.
These Key Competencies will enable the incumbent to perform functions and tasks IAW the Major Duties and Responsibilities listed in the above sections.
Ability to Interpret, Understand and Develop technical: whitepapers, documentation and correspondence; In Accordance With (IAW) Military Standards (MIL-STDS), Technical Manuals (TMs), Field Manuals (FM), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Department of Defense Memorandum, Military Handbooks (MIL-HDBK) and Pamphlets and Publications; and Style Guides.
Familiar with FAR/DFAR, SBIR, PSGP Grant process proposal / whitepaper writing
US Military proposal publishing including Technical, Cost and Management Sections / Volumes.
Familiar with volume creation, publication and production.
Familiar with program executive offices and communications.
Familiar with project, business and technical reports.
Proficiency with MS Office Suite including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Prior DoD Acquisition, Contracts and Pricing, Contracts Representative, Technical Writer experience is desired
